News Director/Chief Operator Job Functions

Under the direct supervision of the Station Manager of Riverfront Broadcasting, Pierre and working alongside all Pierre location staff.

Primary Functions of News Director

  • Overseeing the daily operations of the station(s) news and website content
  • Reviewing stories to make sure they are fair and accurate before they go on the air
  • Ensuring adherence to journalistic and legal standards
  • Directs the gathering and production of news content on-air and online
  • Generates assignments and evaluates news leads and news tips to develop stories
  • Gathers and verifies factual information regarding stories through interview, observation and research
  • May edit news material and reporter submissions; prepares and writes stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards
  • Supervises and oversees the training of department personnel, including students, interns and volunteers
  • Serves as a fill-in host
  • Interacts with management in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals
  • Serves on search committees and other employment related committees as required
  • Monitors equipment usage and ensures the maintenance of equipment inventories
  • Ensures compliance with policies and federal, state and local regulations governing news coverage
  • Participates in the development and management of annual operating budgets and provides fiscal input
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Primary Functions as Chief Operator

  • Work with GM to keep FCC Public file up to date
  • Act as Chief Operator of the KCCR-AM, KLXS-FM, KCCR-FM stations as defined by the FCC. This includes regular travel to each transmitter site for maintenance and repairs
    • maintain all radio equipment
    • maintain the technical operation within FCC guidelines
    • oversee the maintenance of the building and grounds
  • Review weekly EAS/CAP tests as sent and received
  • Monitor and maintain operation of all radio equipment within FCC rules and regulations. Maintain tower and lighting system in accordance with FAA and FCC rules. Ascertain and record all equipment readings and measurements per FCC requirements
  • Review weekly operator logs and program logs for accuracy
  • Perform corrective maintenance to all radio equipment, “on call” emergency repairs and preventive maintenance schedules
    • Maintain inventory of spare parts
    • Install new equipment and design circuits to meet desired objectives
  • Have a good working knowledge of computers
  • Coordinate building and grounds maintenance, internal systems, non-radio equipment, and seek GM approval if outside vendors are required
  • Perform related and special duties as assigned

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors weather conditions, especially in regards to summer time severe weather
    • Monitors weather conditions, especially in regards to severe weather
    • Schedule on-call live coverage
    • Post watches/warnings on-line and on-air as needed
